Dear visitor, you may be surprised by the disappearance of the images. This is the fault of Photobucket which, with no notice, demanded a $400 fee to continue hosting them. This is blackmail! Reflecting on this transformed blog, I suggest that the text can create the image in your mind. If this does not work, please email me: mp95leroux(AT)gmail.com
Frequent scientific warnings about leaving the Holocene geological epoch seem intangible because actual unprecedented problems are not addressed by hegemonic powers. This piece imagines a tangible cultural response to honour our altered world and connect past, present and future environmental change. A bland epitaph on a blue plaque commemorates the vanishing of profound eras of earth’s history and the extinction of billions of populations of animals: “Here we commemorate the passage from the Holocene (11,700 years ago) to the Anthropocene, and that’s all”. The desultory framing sidesteps hard questions of culpability, impact on marginalised communities and intergenerational and interspecies justice.
If you would like to borrow the plaque to organise a commemorative service for your constituency please contact: firstname.lastname@example.org
